ACADEMIC AFFILIATES
Besides very traditional types of training experiences, our residency
offers a progressive curriculum, offering residents extraordinary
training in non-traditional but increasingly important curricular
areas that are essential to be a well-trained family physician prepared
for the future. Always looking to benefit from our ideal location
in suburban Boston, we have also affiliated with three Boston-based
academic organizations considered national leaders in their respective
fields: the Tufts Managed Care Institute, the Mind/Body Medical
Institute of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical
School, and the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy's Pharm.D. residency
program. All Tufts residents directly benefit from these affiliations
through these organizations' faculty teaching either in Boston or
at the Malden Family Medicine site.

Besides our longitudinal practice management curriculum throughout
the three years of residency, all Tufts third year residents spend
a full week at the Tufts Managed Care and Tufts Health Plan, one
of the largest HMO's in the country.
The Tufts Health Care Institute, located in Boston, is an independent,
not-for-profit educational organization established in 1995 as a
collaborative venture of Tufts University School of Medicine and
Tufts Health Plan. THCI is the first venture of its kind between
a medical school and health maintenance organization (HMO)/independent
practice association (IPA)-model. The Institute draws upon the knowledge
and expertise of both the outstanding faculty affiliated with one
of the nation's top medical schools, and the exemplary physicians
who participate in one of the most highly rated HMOs in the United
States. THCI has a comprehensive mission of:
- providing managed care education to healthcare professionals
and organizations and other interested parties, and
- integrating managed care principles into the full continuum
of physician training from medical school and residency into private
practice.

The Tufts University Family Medicine Residency is the first residency
to make this training part of the regular residency curriculum;
all Tufts second year residents attend as part of our Behavioral
Medicine training.
Incorporated in 1988, the Institute evolved from Dr. Herbert Benson's
pioneering work in mind/body medicine at Harvard Medical School
and its teaching hospitals. The Institute seeks to expand the role
of mind/body medicine in traditional medical practice. To fulfill
its mission, the Mind/Body Medical Institute:
- Conducts basic and clinical research to further the understanding
of the scientific bases of mind/body medicine including the role
of belief.
- Develops new clinical programs based on its research.
- Quantifies the costs and benefits of mind/body interactions.
- Teaches medical and other health care students and trains post-doctoral
fellows.
- Trains health care professionals, educators, and clergy to integrate
mind/body interactions into their work.
- Disseminates the results of its findings through medical and
general publications, lectures, symposia, and education programs.

The Tufts University FM Residency is a clinical training site for
the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in Boston. Pharm D candidates
and residents learn from our two Pharm.D. faculty who present pharmacology
and drug therapeutics lectures as well as teach on hospital rounds
and in the Family Medicine Center. They also do "brown bag"
lectures in the Malden community and review drug lists for our patients.
With the explosion of new drugs on the market and Pharmacy being
the fastest-rising cost in medical care, this training is an invaluable
part of our residents' educational experience.
