FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM GOALS
1. Train resident physicians to provide comprehensive continuing
care to all of their patients in a supportive, nurturing atmosphere.
2. Provide training in behavioral science and family dynamics to
foster the physician's awareness of the importance of the family
unit, societal factors, and psychological factors in optimally treating
the patient in a truly holistic manner.
3. Train resident physicians in a "real world" type practice
with appropriate supervision to be capable of effectively managing
over 90% of their patients' clinical problems.
4. Develop resident physicians' skills in coordinating medical
care, utilizing both office and community health resources, and
promote the appropriate use of consulting specialist physicians
to assist in the care of their patients.
5. Provide physician training experiences in a variety of settings,
including the hospital, physician office, nursing home, patient
home, and community at large.
6. Educate resident physicians in real-world practice management
skills and stimulate an analytical attitude toward the most efficient
and effective use of health care resources in the office and society
as a whole.
7. Encourage residents' development of a professional identity
embodying a commitment to excellence, intellectual curiosity, continual
self-assessment, integrity, honesty, empathy, maturity, and appropriate
humility.
8. Train resident family physicians in preventive medicine and
patient education skills to empower their patients to become partners
in achieving health and promoting wellness.
9. Stimulate medical students' interest in the specialty of Family
Medicine and educate the public, students, and other physicians
about our specialty.
10. Assist Cambridge Health Alliance in its mission to provide
care for the people in Boston's Metro-North region in the office,
hospital, home, athletic field, nursing home, and community-at-large.
11. As members of the Tufts University School of Medicine's Department
of Family Medicine and Community Health, assist the department's
efforts to educate medical students and to conduct research directed
at improving the health of the public. Teach residents and medical
students the skills, knowledge, and perspectives needed to understand
the essential links between the social, physical, and economic environments
and the health of individual patients and their families.
12. Promote the concept of personal well-being as a necessary prerequisite
to long-term professional well-being.
